Summary

#1 New York Times Bestseller — With a new Afterword

In Michael Lewis's game-changing bestseller, a small group of Wall Street iconoclasts realize that the U。S。 stock market has been rigged for the benefit of insiders。 They band together—some of them walking away from seven-figure salaries—to investigate, expose, and reform the insidious new ways that Wall Street generates profits。 If you have any contact with the market, even a retirement account, this story is happening to you。

Michael Lewis has a real talent to make stories about the financial world engaging。 I think it has to do with zooming in on quasi-fraudulent activity and describing the lives of the good guys who try to change things to add fairness。This was a little hard to understand in parts。 I was able to understand the front running, and I somewhat understood the kickbacks and fees (I think)。 I didn't really get the dark pool concept in its full meaning。 There were some parts where I should have been rewind Michael Lewis has a real talent to make stories about the financial world engaging。 I think it has to do with zooming in on quasi-fraudulent activity and describing the lives of the good guys who try to change things to add fairness。This was a little hard to understand in parts。 I was able to understand the front running, and I somewhat understood the kickbacks and fees (I think)。 I didn't really get the dark pool concept in its full meaning。 There were some parts where I should have been rewinding the audiobook but chose to continue。 My fault。I had a harder time staying engaged when it came to the IEX exchange in the second half of the book。 I think it's an awesome book, and I'd recommend it。 I'm not in finance, and it was very interesting。 。。。more

Audiobook。 I guess I completely misunderstood High Frequency Trading until now。 And never thought it was established to exploit instead of helping investors。

Interesting novel about High Frequency Trading。 This is an industry I did not know a lot about before reading the book。 Very easy read and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the HFT industry。

Loved this book! Michael Lewis gave a wonderful introduction to high frequency trading and gave you peek at what the HFT world looks like。 The book was fast-paced and relatively easy to follow along。 Learned a lot in this book and led me to ask a lot of questions about the why our markets move the way they do。

Moran

Even though this book focuses on HFT and explains what it is and why it's so harmful to financial markets (and investor's savings), it exposes a bigger picture: in most cases smart people will always find a way to bypass regulation, especially if they have very strong incentives (in this case, billions of dollars。。。)。 Great storytelling by Michael Lewis。 Even though this book focuses on HFT and explains what it is and why it's so harmful to financial markets (and investor's savings), it exposes a bigger picture: in most cases smart people will always find a way to bypass regulation, especially if they have very strong incentives (in this case, billions of dollars。。。)。 Great storytelling by Michael Lewis。 。。。more

Fantastic story around the beginning of high frequency trading。 There is also a great movie based on that book, but I happened to forgot the name of the movie。

Jan van der Star

Brilliantly shows how fucked up the entire financial markets are, and how far removed we are from solving this mess。

Faolitaruna

Surprisingly exiting telling of the story of arcane financial techniques。

Pieter Morlion

Wonderful story。 However, leaves a lot of open questions and ends in a strange way。

Big Michael Lewis fan but this one was very hard to get into。 Not sure if that's because of the writing or my brain just going numb in frustration at yet another example of capitalism gone awry。 Either way this one was a big, fat "meh" for me。 Big Michael Lewis fan but this one was very hard to get into。 Not sure if that's because of the writing or my brain just going numb in frustration at yet another example of capitalism gone awry。 Either way this one was a big, fat "meh" for me。 。。。more

Another fun Michael Lewis read, crazy how the markets were manipulated, ultimately unsurprising!

This taught me A LOT about the American stock market in an easy narrative way。 It's really interesting to hear the simple facts around greed and how the tech of everything on Wall Street works。 I'd definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to learn more about the American financial system! The first non-fiction book that I just couldn’t put down! It was awesome 👏

Fascinating look at the tech race that undergirds the stock race on Wall Street。 Getting an understanding of how the market is driven by creating tangible advantages over brilliance is the most fascinating part of the book。 I understand why Lewis framed the “rebels” trying to break out of the system as the protagonists and guiding characters, but I don’t think their story was that interesting or impactful。

It probably was a great book and a shocking read when it first released。But going through the meme stocks saga aka GME & AMC, I had in some way or form read about dark pools, HFT and IEX。 One thing the saga confirmed to me is that no one actually knows how the stock market works, how it really works。 Lots of loopholes that these companies can leverage to have an upper hand。Glad to see that IEX is growing and some stock brokers give you the option to route orders through them。 They still have a l It probably was a great book and a shocking read when it first released。But going through the meme stocks saga aka GME & AMC, I had in some way or form read about dark pools, HFT and IEX。 One thing the saga confirmed to me is that no one actually knows how the stock market works, how it really works。 Lots of loopholes that these companies can leverage to have an upper hand。Glad to see that IEX is growing and some stock brokers give you the option to route orders through them。 They still have a long way to go though。 。。。more

Very similar to 'The Big Short'。 The premise is already interesting enough, but it's the characters that make it。 Very similar to 'The Big Short'。 The premise is already interesting enough, but it's the characters that make it。 。。。more

Peter got it right, I think Lewis misses the mark every time。 Life really isn’t one big conspiracy - people just aren’t that good。

Very entertaining。 I know there are some criticisms to this narrative, so I am curious to look into them。

A wonderful book that blows open the revolution that happened right under your noses if you weren't a wallstreet insider。 High frequency trading is a method that only benefits it's traders and is out of reach of 99% of Americans。 This quiet revolution feeds on the common folk, their investments and retirement funds。 Michael Lewis has a talent of entering entire new worlds and breaking them down for you to understand their inner workings。 a 5/5 A wonderful book that blows open the revolution that happened right under your noses if you weren't a wallstreet insider。 High frequency trading is a method that only benefits it's traders and is out of reach of 99% of Americans。 This quiet revolution feeds on the common folk, their investments and retirement funds。 Michael Lewis has a talent of entering entire new worlds and breaking them down for you to understand their inner workings。 a 5/5 。。。more

As with "The Big Short" and "Boomerang," Lewis does an excellent job of making a highly technical subject accessible to the layperson。 Even so, and though I have both a career in finance and an MBA from a top B- school with a concentration in finance, this was a challenging read。 So proceed with some caution, unless high speed trading and markets are of significant interest - in which case this is a gem!
